We opened the map of Florence and couldn't stop thinking about our first stop: the impressive Duomo of Florence. This amazing building, with its giant dome, is one of the most iconic landmarks in all of Italy.
Did you know that you can climb to the top of the dome? It's a bit of a workout, 463 steps, but the view from the top is simply spectacular. You can see the whole city and, if the day is clear, even the hills of Tuscany. Do you dare to go up?
We continue to the Accademia Gallery, to visit the famous David. We imagine Michelangelo, chisel in hand, working with passion and patience to create this incredible work of art from 1504.
If someone says: ‘but we've already seen this!’, they might be right because there are 2 replicas of the David in the city: a marble one in Piazza della Signora, right where the original was until it was taken to the Accademia Gallery in 1873 for protection, and a bronze one in Piazzale Michelangelo, on the other side of the river where people go to watch the sunsets.
Then we went to Ponte Vecchio, full of jewellery shops and large windows on both sides. These shops used to be butcher's shops that were removed from the bridge at the end of the 16th century because of the bad smell they produced. Our budget didn't allow us to shop there, but we could take some cool selfies and have an ice cream.
It is located in the Piazza della Signoria, the most important square in Florence. When we arrived Pinto already said: ‘look, another David’. We were surprised by the high tower of the Palazzo, and upon entering there is a charming courtyard, decorated with frescoes and beautiful statues.
Did you know that there are a few hidden passages in the Palazzo Vecchio? They were built by the Medici, to escape from their enemies.

It is played in Piazza Santa Croce on 24 June. It is a mixture of football and rugby. The players are dressed in the colours of the different quarters of the city, San Giovanni is the ‘Verdi’ (‘green’), Sta. Maria Novella is the ‘Rossi’ (‘red’), Santo Spirito is the ‘Bianchi’ (‘white’) and Santa Croce is the ‘azzurri’ and it's all a bit of a gross.....
A popular legend says that touching the boar's snout brings luck. You can make a wish by dropping a coin from the boar's snout. If it passes through the grids and falls directly into the fountain, the wish will come true. It is in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo.
Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance. People such as Amerigo Vespucci, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Niccolo Machiavelli, Raphael and Donatello lived here.
