We have travelled back in time to the Middle Ages, a time of knights and warring kingdoms. In the distance, towering castles and fortifications rise up, built to defend territories and protect their inhabitants. Their high walls, watchtowers and moats were almost impassable barriers against enemy attack. Inside, feudal lords ruled, knights trained for battle and minstrels entertained in the halls - a world full of intrigue and strategy!
The heart of the feudal system, it's like a small world within a small world! Pinto and I have travelled through their lands and discovered that everything here has an order: the lord's castle, the cultivated fields and the manors where the peasants live. They told us that the peasants have to work the lord's land and pay to use the mill or the bridge. How curious! Did you know that the fiefs were almost self-sufficient and that almost all the necessary food and goods were produced within them?
We have become apprentice architects and travel through the Middle Ages discovering two fascinating styles. First, Romanesque art: churches with thick walls, small windows and religious frescoes decorating the interior - an atmosphere of total seclusion! Then, we move forward in time and arrive at Gothic art: soaring cathedrals, coloured rose windows and huge stained glass windows that flood everything with light. What a contrast! Did you know that many Gothic cathedrals took centuries to build and involved several generations of craftsmen?
We sneak into a medieval monastery and are surprised by its tranquillity. Here, the monks copy books at large candle-lit tables and pray in the cloister - they are the guardians of knowledge! But not everything happens within stone walls... In the 12th century, the first universities were founded and learning spread. Pinto and I have sat in one of their classrooms, but it's all in Latin! Did you know that the first students specialised in law, medicine or theology?
In our map of the Middle Ages to colour in you will find a study document with questions to investigate personally or in groups and elements to observe that are representative of each period. Below is a small sample of them.
Before the imposing stone fortresses, castles were simple wooden structures built on hills or mounds of earth, but they were easy to erect but did not stand up well to attack or the passage of time. Although easy to erect, they did not stand up well to attack or the passage of time, which is why there are hardly any remains of them today!
Knights demonstrated their prowess in spectacular tournaments, but jousting was individual combat with real spears and armour. They were not always just for honour or entertainment? sometimes they served to settle real disputes!
At a time when few people could read, minstrels carried news, legends and music from village to village, bringing laughter and excitement to their audiences with songs and epic tales. With songs and epic tales, they made their audiences laugh and moved them. Did you know that thanks to them we know stories like that of the Cid Campeador?
