La Reina Bridge

We arrive on our 3rd stage from Roncesvalles. It is hard, but we are getting used to it. Its name comes from the fact that it was Queen Doña Mayor who ordered this bridge to be built a thousand years ago to make it easier for pilgrims to cross the river. This is where the French Way meets the Aragonese Way, with thousands of pilgrims passing over every year.

Burgos Cathedral

After 11 days of walking we arrived in Burgos. We passed by the Plaza de Rey San Fernando and took a photo next to the statue of the pilgrim. Then we went to the cathedral, it is impressive! They explained to us that it is a jewel of gothic architecture in Spain. Inside is the tomb of the Cid Campeador, legend of the reconquest.

More than a month has passed and we enter Santiago de Compostela. There is a mixture of joy at completing this adventure and sadness at the end of a unique experience that fills your soul and gives you another perspective on life. We put the last stamp on the Compostela, a memory that we will keep with affection. Bon camino pilgrim!

Which road is the most travelled?

The Way of Saint James is a network of pilgrimage routes that converge in the city of Santiago de Compostela. There are several routes, but some of the longest and most iconic are:

Camino Francés, the most popular, begins in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, on the French border.

El Camino Portugués, the second most travelled. Most people start in Tui, the first Spanish town.

Inside is a huge 53 Kilos incense burner, the Botafumeiro, handled by the eight ‘tiraboleiros’. In the old days it was used to perfume the cathedral, due to the unpleasant smell that pilgrims brought with them after their long journey.
